Buying Your Next Toothbrush

Published on November 30th, 2018 by Michael C. Griffin, D.M.D.

Take our Lakeview dentist’s word for it, you should be replacing your toothbrush far more often than you might think. We recommend swapping out your old brush for a brand new one at least every three months, but it’s important to make the switch earlier if it’s showing wear or you’ve been sick. Given how often a toothbrush replacement is necessary, you may be wondering what type you should buy. Our dentist in Lakeview is here to offer some recommendations.

Size

Although you can choose between smaller and larger brush head options, we recommend opting for a smaller one. The perfect sized toothbrush is one that allows you to easily reach every surface of your teeth. Smaller sized brushes allow you to access those hard-to-reach areas of your mouth with ease.

Bristles

Have you ever wondered whether to choose soft, medium, or hard bristles while browsing for a new toothbrush at the drug store? If you have, our advice is to purchase a brush with soft bristles. This is often the most comfortable and safest choice. Depending on how hard you brush, firmer bristles can cause gum damage.

Electric or Standard?

While an electric toothbrush is typically more effective, you can still receive the same results with a disposable toothbrush as long as you use the proper methods.

No matter what toothbrush you pick, always remember to brush your teeth at least twice a day! For an extra thorough cleaning, schedule an appointment with your dentist in Lakeview!
